Maine Revolts Against Digital U.S. ID Card

By Jason Szep

BOSTON (Reuters) - Maine lawmakers on Thursday became the first in the nation to demand repeal of a federal law tightening identification requirements for drivers' licenses, a post-September 11 security measure that states say will cost them billions of dollars to administer.
Maine lawmakers passed a resolution urging repeal of the Real ID Act, which would create a national digital identification system by 2008. The lawmakers said it would cost Maine about $185 million, fail to boost security and put people at greater risk of identity theft.
Maine's resolution is the strongest stand yet by a state against the law, which Congress passed in May 2004 and gave states three years to implement. Similar repeal measures are pending in eight other states.
"We cannot be spending millions of state dollars on an initiative that does more harm to our state than good," said Maine's House Majority leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat, in a statement that called it a "massive unfunded federal mandate."
The ID act sets national standards for licenses which will have to include a digital photo, anti-counterfeiting features and machine-readable technology.
States will have to verify documents presented with license applications such as birth certificates, Social Security cards and utility bills, and will have to link their license databases so they can all be accessed as a single network.
States also will have to verify that a person applying for a license is in the country legally. States will be able to issue separate credentials to illegal aliens so that they will still be able to drive.
The National Governors Association, the National Conference of State Legislatures and the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators said in a September report that the law would cost states more than $11 billion over five years and take at least another seven years to implement.
"It's a national ID card on steroids," said Barry Steinhardt, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Technology and Liberty Project. "This will indeed be a real nightmare.
But backers say the driver's license -- a primary means of identification in the United States -- is fundamentally insecure because of widespread identity theft.
Some 227 million people hold drivers' licenses or identity cards given out by states, which issue or renew about 70 million each year.

Rumsfeld's Transition Raises Questions

By Rowan Scarborough
Washington Times

Former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld has left the Pentagon, but not the Defense Department.
On Jan. 4, Mr. Rumsfeld opened a government-provided transition office in Arlington and has seven Pentagon-paid staffers working for him, a Pentagon official said.
The Pentagon lists Mr. Rumsfeld as a "nonpaid consultant," a status he needs in order to review secret and top-secret documents, the official said.
Mr. Rumsfeld and his aides, who include close adviser Stephen Cambone, are sifting through the thousands of pages of documents generated during his tenure.
The Pentagon official said former secretaries are entitled to a transition office to sort papers, some of which can be taken with them for a library, for archives or to write a book.
The transition office has raised some eyebrows inside the Pentagon. Some question the size of the staff, which includes two military officers and two enlisted men. They also ask why the sorting could not have been done from the time Mr. Rumsfeld resigned Nov. 8 to when he left the building Dec. 18.
The Pentagon official, who asked not to be named, said Mr. Rumsfeld served nearly six years as secretary, more than any other defense chief but one, meaning he accumulated an above-average pile of paper. What's more, Mr. Rumsfeld managed the bureaucracy via "snowflakes," his typed directives on white paper that fell all over the Pentagon by the hundreds.
Mr. Rumsfeld, who resigned under pressure after Republicans lost control of Congress in an election largely decided on the stalemated Iraq war, reportedly is undecided about his long-term plans. But he thinks he has a lot to contribute in the debate over new ideas and national security. He has talked about writing a book and articles on foreign affairs, but he has made no final decision.
Mr. Rumsfeld's two immediate predecessors handled their transitions differently. William Cohen, President Clinton's last defense secretary, went straight to his new consulting firm in Washington, said a top adviser, Robert Tyrer.
The Pentagon set up an office with two military personnel to sort through his papers for about six weeks. "It was useful to have a place to make sure things were sorted correctly and all issues of classification strictly reviewed and observed," said Mr. Tyrer, who is now president of the Cohen Group. The unclassified documents were transferred to the University of Maine's William S. Cohen Center, he said. Mr. Cohen's predecessor, William Perry, left office in January 1997 and returned immediately to his home state of California. He did not open a transition office in Washington. He began teaching at Stanford University, said Deborah Gordon, his spokeswoman. His papers arrived in compact disc form and were deposited at the Hoover Institution on the Stanford campus, she said.

Senate Strikes Restrictions on Grassroots Activism from Lobby Reform Bill

Contact: Stacey Holliday, Concerned Women for America, 202-488-7000 ext. 126

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 /Christian Newswire/ -- The U.S. Senate voted last night to delete a provision from the Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act of 2007, a lobby reform bill that threatened grassroots activists with harsh restrictions and punishments. Senator Robert Bennett (R-Utah) introduced Amendment 20 to remove the provision that could have punished grassroots activists with massive fines and imprisonment for encouraging citizens to be informed and involved in the political process.

Concerned Women for America's (CWA's) President Wendy Wright said, "This provision was an unconstitutional attempt to silence and punish Americans for encouraging citizens to be involved in the political process. More and more Americans want to know what Congress is working on and to express their views to their representatives. Grassroots organizations provide vital information for citizens to communicate with their elected officials. Placing restrictions and unfair limitations on these efforts would be an assault on the freedom of speech and the representative government we cherish.

"Many thanks to Senator Bennett and Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) for their leadership in eliminating an unconstitutional provision from this bill. We also applaud the many Americans who flooded Capitol Hill with calls and emails in support of the Amendment. CWA, along with other grassroots organizations and citizen activists across America, will continue our efforts to promote and instill family values in our society."

Anti-First Amendment S.1 Passes Congress

Kurt Nimmo
Friday, January 19, 2007

It was bad enough George Bush Senior found it necessary to blame bloggers for creating what he deems an “adversarial and ugly climate” (never mind his particular bit of ugliness in Iraq more than a decade ago, eventually resulting in the murder of more than a million people), last month we had the Manchurian candidate, John McCain, introducing legislation “that would fine blogs up to $300,000 for offensive statements, photos and videos posted by visitors on comment boards, effectively nixing the open exchange of ideas on the Internet, providing a lethal injection for unrestrained opinion, and acting as the latest attack tool to chill freedom of speech on the world wide web,” as Paul Joseph Watson writes for Prison Planet.

Since Watson wrote his piece about McCain’s anti-First Amendment bill, Richard A. Viguerie has warned that Congress is attempting the silence bloggers and other critics of the government. “We have the First Amendment right to speak and urge citizens to contact Washington—without the intimidation inherent in federal regulation of our activities.”

Of course, as a Republican partisan, Viguerie concentrates on Pelosi and the Democrats while quite naturally ignoring Bush and the neocons. But even so, his warning about Section 220 of S. 1, a lobbying reform bill that went before the Senate should not go unheeded—it will “require grassroots causes, even bloggers, who communicate to 500 or more members of the public on policy matters, to register and report quarterly to Congress the same as the big K Street lobbyists. Section 220 would amend existing lobbying reporting law by creating the most expansive intrusion on First Amendment rights ever. For the first time in history, critics of Congress will need to register and report with Congress itself,” according to Viguerie.

It’s comical, in a perverse sort of way, that Democrats and Republican—turn them upside down, they all look the same—are “bitterly split on … how to clean up the scandal-rocked U.S. Congress,” according to the Washington Post. Never mind that Congress is basically a whorehouse of corporate and political special interests and such a bill would not touch most of them.

Republicans are not opposed to the “bipartisan bill to revamp the Senate’s ethics and lobbying rules” because it is a slap in the face to the First Amendment, but rather because they want to include a “line item veto” provision that would further consolidate Bush’s unitary decidership. “Attaching an unrelated measure to this bipartisan bill is an obvious attempt to derail passage of the strongest ethics reform legislation,” complained Democrats Russ Feingold and Barack Obama, the presidential wanna-be.

As noted here last week, Democrats made sure to set up a special loophole, called an “ethics exemption,” for their friends. “A major loophole in the Democrats’ recently unveiled ethics package will allow non-profit arms of controversial lobbying organizations to fund travel excursions for members of Congress,” Raw Story reported earlier this month. Pelosi and crew designed this “loophole” specifically for AIPAC and the Aspen Institute, a Rockefeller and Carnegie globalist crime syndicate.

Not that opposition matters. “The Senate, responding to voter frustration with corruption and special interest influence in Washington, on Thursday overwhelmingly approved far-reaching ethics and lobbying reform legislation,” reports Time. “Under the bill, passed 96-2, senators will give up gifts and free travel from lobbyists, pay more for travel on corporate jets and make themselves more accountable for the pet projects they insert into bills.”

No mention here of the fact “Pelosi & Company’s lobbying legislation ‘reform’ would define political communications to and even between citizens as ‘lobbying.’ This turns the definition of lobbying on its head and is in violation of the First Amendment,” according to Viguerie. “Moreover, their legislation would treat grassroots activists more harshly than the K Street lobbyists and the big corporations and unions. They get loopholes that the smallest critics using the Internet wouldn’t enjoy. Communicating to as few as 500 people would trigger the registration and quarterly reporting to Congress…. In truth, the grassroots legislation would help protect corruption in Washington by silencing critics and diminishing the ability of grassroots causes to communicate with the general public.”

But the Democrats, portrayed as our saviors during the last election cycle, are not finished. “As the new Democratic majority continues its 100-hour legislative blitz in the U.S. House, one Democrat has quietly reintroduced controversial legislation that would give the federal government more authority over so-called ‘hate crimes,’” the Cybercast News Service reported on January 16. “This is the most dangerous legislation ever to come before Congress,” warns Rev. Ted Pike. “It leads directly to an end of free speech. Once free speech is gone, there is little to prevent the loss of all our other freedoms. The new Democrat-controlled Congress has all the votes it needs to quickly run this Orwellian bill through committee in the House and Senate and pass it.”

In 1936, Nikolai Bukharin crafted the Soviet Constitution, which promised freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press, freedom of religious worship, and the inviolability of individuals, their home and the privacy of their correspondence. Stalin claimed to support the constitution, even as he arrested thousands of dissidents opposed to the government. In total, millions of people were imprisoned and killed, most of them for opposing Stalin, including Nikolai Bukharin, the founder of the Soviet Constitution.

In America, the government claims to uphold the Constitution and the Bill of Rights while passing legislation designed to curtail if not eliminate our liberty. Is it possible, in the months ahead, as both Pike and Viguerie warn, the government will, under the direction of a Democrat Congress, begin a momentous process that may eventually result in the sort of massive crimes Stalin inflicted on the people of the Soviet Union?

Bloggers Who Criticize Government May Face Prison

Bill would allow rounding up and imprisoning of non-registered political writers

Steve Watson
Infowars.net
Thursday, January 18, 2007

You'd be forgiven for thinking that it was some new restriction on free speech in Communist China. But it isn't. The U.S. Government wants to force bloggers and online grassroots activists to register and regularly report their activities to Congress in the latest astounding attack on the internet and the First Amendment.

Richard A. Viguerie, Chairman of GrassrootsFreedom.com, a website dedicated to fighting efforts to silence grassroots movements, states:

"Section 220 of S. 1, the lobbying reform bill currently before the Senate, would require grassroots causes, even bloggers, who communicate to 500 or more members of the public on policy matters, to register and report quarterly to Congress the same as the big K Street lobbyists. Section 220 would amend existing lobbying reporting law by creating the most expansive intrusion on First Amendment rights ever. For the first time in history, critics of Congress will need to register and report with Congress itself."

In other words Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats may redefine the meaning of lobbying in order that political communications to and even between citizens falls under the same legislation.

Under current law any 'lobbyist" who 'knowingly and willingly fails to file or report." quarterly to the government faces criminal charges including a possible jail term of up to one year.

The amendment is currently on hold.

This latest attack on bloggers comes hot on the heels of Republican Senator John McCain's proposal to introduce legislation that would fine blogs up to $300,000 for offensive statements, photos and videos posted by visitors on comment boards.

McCain's proposal is presented under the banner of saving children from sexual predators and encourages informants to shop website owners to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, who then pass the information on to the relevant police authorities.

Despite a total lack of any evidence that children are being victimized en mass by bloggers or people who leave comments on blog sites, it seems likely that the proposal will become legislation in some form. It is well known that McCain has a distaste for his blogosphere critics, causing a definite conflict of interest where any proposal to restrict blogs on his part is concerned.

In recent months, a chorus of propaganda intended to demonize the Internet and further lead it down a path of strict control has spewed forth from numerous establishment organs:

During an appearance with his wife Barbara on Fox News last November, George Bush senior slammed Internet bloggers for creating an "adversarial and ugly climate."

- The White House's own recently de-classified strategy for "winning the war on terror" targets Internet conspiracy theories as a recruiting ground for terrorists and threatens to "diminish" their influence.

- The Pentagon recently announced its effort to infiltrate the Internet and propagandize for the war on terror.

- In a speech last month, Homeland Security director Michael Chertoff identified the web as a "terror training camp," through which "disaffected people living in the United States" are developing "radical ideologies and potentially violent skills." Chertoff pledged to dispatch Homeland Security agents to local police departments in order to aid in the apprehension of domestic terrorists who use the Internet as a political tool.

- A landmark legal case on behalf of the Recording Industry Association of America and other global trade organizations seeks to criminalize all Internet file sharing of any kind as copyright infringement, effectively shutting down the world wide web - and their argument is supported by the U.S. government.

- A landmark legal ruling in Sydney goes further than ever before in setting the trap door for the destruction of the Internet as we know it and the end of alternative news websites and blogs by creating the precedent that simply linking to other websites is breach of copyright and piracy.

- The European Union, led by former Stalinist and potential future British Prime Minister John Reid, has also vowed to shut down "terrorists" who use the Internet to spread propaganda.

- The EU also recently proposed legislation that would prevent users from uploading any form of video without a license.

- We have also previously exposed how moves are afoot to clamp down on internet neutrality and even to designate a highly restricted new form of the internet known as Internet 2.
Make no mistake, the internet, one of the greatest outposts of free speech ever created is under constant attack by powerful people who cannot operate within a society where information flows freely and unhindered. All these moves mimic stories we hear every week out of State Controlled Communist China, where the internet is strictly regulated and virtually exists as its own entity away from the rest of the web.

The phrases "Chinese government" and "Mao Zedong" have even been censored on China's official Web sites because they are "Sensitive phrases". Are we to allow our supposedly Democratic governments to implement the same type of restrictive policies here?

Under section 220 of the lobbying reform bill, Infowars.net could be required to seek a license in order to bring this information to you. IF we were granted a license we would then have to report our activities to the government four times per year in order to bring you this information. Does that sound more like free speech or more like totalitarianism?

As well as calling the Senate you should go to GrassrootsFreedom.com which has a petition that you can sign against Section 220 of S. 1, the lobbying reform bill.

Emergency Alert - Federal 'Anti-Hate' Bill Introduced In House

On January 5, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, quietly introduced the Anti-Defamation League's federal hate crimes bill into the House of Representatives. This is the same hate bill she introduced two years ago, which was passed by the House in fall 2005. Previously called The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, this freedom-stealing legislation has been repeatedly defeated, usually as a result of public outcry and Republican opposition in Conference.

ADL has dramatically changed the title. It is now The David Ray Hate Crimes Prevention Act, in memory of a Texan adolescent brutally sodomized with a metal pipe. Ray replaces Matthew Shephard as the new poster boy of hate law propaganda. Many in Congress will be inclined to pass this legislation with their sympathy votes.

Rep. Lee's office told me that since the House passed this bill in 2005, it could rapidly pass to the floor for a vote. If there is strong bipartisan support in Congress for a defunct bill, it can be resurrected in committee in minutes, by calling for a vote of approval.

The hate bill enjoys this kind of strong bipartisan support; it passed the House previously by a large margin. We know for sure that ADL and Pelosi plan to have it ratified during their "first 100 hours."

Take Action Now

Here's what all lovers of free speech must do, preferably before the weekend:

1. Go to our list of "Hate Bill Subcommittee Members." This is the "Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security," the House Judiciary Committee that will consider this bill.
2. Call all members of this committee, including Sheila Jackson Lee tomorrow and give the following message: "Please don't vote for the David Ray Hate Crimes Prevention Act, HR 254. Hate crimes laws such as this have destroyed free speech in Canada and most European countries."
3. Send my flyer "Hate Laws Will Make You a Criminal" (available here) to as many of the legislative aides of each of these subcommittee members as possible.

Rep. Lee's office said bills' progress through committee depends on how much support or criticism they receive. It's time to bury the hate bill in an avalanche of protest from tens of thousands of Americans! This is how we defeated the hate bill three times in the last two years. This is how we can again save free speech for our children, our grandchildren and ourselves.

Ron Paul: Next President Of The USA?

Texas Congressman enjoys support across political spectrum, anti-war pro-freedom hero represents America's last hope

Paul Joseph Watson & Alex Jones
Prison Planet
Friday, January 12, 2007

Ron Paul's office has confirmed reports that the Texas Congressman is set to run for the 2008 Presidency. Paul unites opposition to the war and the police state at home across the entire political spectrum and in contrast to the current gaggle of criminals running the White House, represents everything that America truly stands for. A gargantuan effort in support of Ron Paul needs to be mobilized now to prevent Americans from being hoodwinked once again into electing a different puppet of the same dark establishment in 2008.

Paul first ran for President as the Libertarian candidate in 1988, receiving a massive 400,000 votes. He now commands the support of those all across the political spectrum, from libertarians through anti-war Democrats to real paleoconservative Republicans.

Paul has been in and out of Congress since the 70's and is universally hated by the Republican elite, who routinely back Democrats against him just to try and get him out of office. The former Vietnam flight surgeon is the perfect candidate for President and activists from every corner of every political persuasion should mobilize now in an attempt to help Paul shatter the power monopoly of the Republican and Democrat establishment who have worked together for decades to slit America's throat in the interests of power, greed, and ego - all working towards the realization of a new world order.

The Texan represents a dying breed in Congress, those who actually cast their votes in accordance with the Constitution and not at the discretion of lobbyists or the fear that the elite will tarnish their political careers if they don't continually support the establishment. As a result Ron Paul is the elite's worse nightmare, simply having him on the ticket itself will be a massive public relations blow, and that's why media organs will probably be activated to try and discredit him before 2008.

Paul was one of only a handful of Republicans to vote against the illegal invasion of Iraq, contenting rightly that the Constitution clearly states that only Congress can declare war. In bucking a trend, Paul was anti-war long before the majority of the country came around to a similar way of thinking following the catastrophe of the occupation.

While Democrats soft-peddle and cozy up to Bush, creating phony arguments about the level of troop presence in Iraq and ignoring the majority will of the country to bring the troops home immediately, Ron Paul's opposition to unnecessary wars of intervention has remained steadfast throughout his entire political career.

If a gargantuan effort is made from now until the end of 2008 to heighten Paul's media profile and forward him as America's last hope, he truly has a significant chance of giving Jeb Bush, Rudy Giuliani or whichever elitist puppet the Republicans choose to put forward a real run for their money.

At the very least it's a chance to attract attention to some serious issues and hold the establishment's feet to the fire. But with the favor of the political landscape continually swinging away from the scam repeatedly run by the Republicrats and Democans, we should really start off on a positive footing and consider the fact that Ron Paul, though still an underdog, has a real chance of becoming the next President.

According to the Associated Press, "Paul bills himself as "The Taxpayers' Best Friend," and is routinely ranked either first or second in the House by the National Taxpayers Union, a national group advocating low taxes and limited government."

On every single issue of national importance - borders, the war, limited government, U.S. sovereignty, tax and the federal reserve - Ron Paul stands for populist ideals that the country is screaming out for after seven years of hell under Bush, preceded by eight years of disgrace under Bill Clinton.

Ron Paul voted against the Patriot Act, opposes the draft, advocates the abolition of the income tax, urges the re-introduction of the gold standard, and stands against initiatives to strip the U.S. of its sovereignty such as CAFTA and the FTAA.

During several appearances on The Alex Jones Show, Ron Paul has consistently upheld his commitment to civil liberties, slammed the militarized police state that Bush has created and also called for immediate impeachment proceedings to be brought against the current incumbent of the White House.

President Ron Paul could truly return America to the great nation it once was and his decision to run is an exciting development that we should all embrace and stand beside him in the fight to restore some form of dignity to the office of President that has been completely absent since the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963.

Students kicked off school bus in St. Paul For Speaking English

ABC Eyewitness News
Wednesday, January 10, 2007

Imagine sending your kids off to school, but when they get to the bus they are told they can't get on because they speak English.

That's right, English.

It happened to a few children in St. Paul and now the school district is apologizing.

Rachel Armstrong sent her kids to pick up the bus as usual Monday, but after the driver let the kids on, he told them he would not pick them up again. He even said he wouldn't take them home that afternoon.

Armstrong left work early Tuesday, forced to pick up her kids from Phalen Lake Elementary School.

Her twin girls, 10, and her son, 8, were kicked off their regular school bus. They were told by the bus driver the route is for non-English speaking students only.

"I was furious. I was at work and I was just mad." Armstrong said. "I felt like we were being discriminated because we speak English. Just because they speak English, they can't ride the school bus. I mean, this is America, right?"

Administrators at St. Paul Public Schools admit the district made a mistake when it stranded the kids at school Monday.

However, the district points out, that particular bus route serves one of three language academies. The one at Phalen Lake is for Hmong students learning English.

The academies all have separate bus routes to keep its students together.

The district decided to enforce the separate routes beginning Monday, but it did not tell the Armstrong family.

"It is our responsibility to ensure the safety of these kids and we made a mistake. The kids should have gotten home that day," Dayna Kennedy, a public relations representative said.

The district also discovered the Armstrongs no longer live in the Phalen Lake School boundary because they moved last year.

So even though the district apologized, if they want to still go to Phalen, they are going to have to get their own ride

An Open Letter To America

Please watch this news clip first.
And now please take a minute and listen to what i have to say.

on September 11th 1991 George bush Sr. gave a speech describing a New World Order. For years people like myself were criticized for merely mentioning the words New World Order. news reports told us "anyone that talks about a new world order is a nut" the FBI's new terror manuals say "anyone that talks about the constitution, stands up for his/her constitutional rights or speaks of a "NEW WORLD ORDER" is a TERRORIST! so now by definition Lou Dobbs is a terrorist nut job.

So its all out in the open now. all the people that said people like myself were nuts and tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist's, what say you now? were we insane in a sane world? or are we sane in an insane world? i choose the latter.

So now i ask you citizens in the republic of America! Will you stand by and call sophomoric names from the side lines? Or will you join us and take back our country? the country our forefathers gave their lives to create! will you just stand there and give it over to the corporations?
Or will you stand up and say enough is enough, get educated on the facts and make a stand?! we have very little time to take our beloved republic back from the globalists, the time to act is now!

if every American who knows whats right would stand up and say "NO! IM NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!" We could take this country back overnight.
but you have to get educated on the facts first. So you can then in turn reach out and educate others. its very simple.
If you would like for me to help you understand whats really going on in the world today, please contact me {my contact info is provided in the side bar} or if you're brave enough just post here.
I'm interested in just getting together with individuals or groups of individuals and discussing world and local issues. to take action peacefully and get something done.
what say you people of America? if you are as truly as patriotic as you say you are, you would stand up against the destruction of our country through the North American Union. if not get out of our way, because were trying to jump start the heart of our great country. and all you're doing is nothing but aiding and abetting a criminal government.
These are historical and monumental times in our country's history! what will you say to your children and your childrens children, when they ask what you did to help save our dying country? what will you say!?
so please i beg you dear Americans stand up before its too late....stand up before its too late.

Iraqi freedum- Iraq orders shutdown of Baghdad office of TV station

By Associated Press
Monday, January 1, 2007 - Updated: 06:23 PM EST

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Iraqi government Monday ordered the closure of the Baghdad office of a Dubai-based television station whose newscaster wore black mourning clothes while reporting on the hanging of Saddam Hussein.
A spokesman for the Interior Ministry said the Al-Sharqiya station, owned by a former chief of radio and television for Saddam, had incited violence and hatred in its coverage and had ignored warnings to stop.
Brigadier Abdul-Karim Khalaf, the spokesman, said the order was issued after an allegedly false report by the news channel about the abduction of three Sunni Arab female students from a university.
But the order also followed criticism of the tone of Al-Sharqiya’s coverage of Saturday’s execution, which struck some as sympathetic to the ousted dictator.
In contrast to state-run television reports that described Saddam as a “tyrant” and “criminal,” a newscaster on Al-Sharqiya - which means “The Eastern One” - referred to him Sunday as “president.”
Iraq’s government is dominated by the country’s Shiite Muslim majority. Al-Sharqiya is sometimes mocked by critics as “Al-Baathiya” for its alleged sympathies for Saddam’s outlawed Baath Party, which had helped Iraq’s Sunni minority rule the country.
Shiite and Sunni are now locked in a sectarian war that has claimed thousands of lives.
It’s not clear how the closure might effect Al-Sharqiya, which broadcasts to Iraq from Dubai by satellite.
Al-Sharqiya reported Monday night that its offices in Baghdad were raided and sealed by Iraqi authorities. But the station said those offices were vacated three months ago in response to attacks on staff.
Al-Sharqiya remained on the air Monday, broadcasting video of a protest against Saddam’s execution that was staged by the Professional Associations - an umbrella group of unions representing doctors, engineers and lawyers - at the group’s offices in Amman, Jordan.
Saddam’s eldest daughter, Raghad, briefly attended the demonstration in her first public appearance since his execution.
State-run Al-Iraqiya may have referred to the controversy over Al-Sharqiya’s coverage, when it criticized reporting on Saddam’s death by rival Iraqi and regional Arab television stations.
“The execution of Saddam unveiled the many masks of those who don’t like to see a strong, civilized and developed Iraq,” an Al-Iraqiya newscaster said Monday. “The male and female news readers of some Arab and Iraqi satellite channels rushed to their cupboards to wear their black clothes, announcing their sorrow about the joy of Iraqis.”
Newscasters on the influential Al-Jazeera satellite channel also wore black in the aftermath of Saddam’s hanging.
The government did not specifically cite the controversy over Al-Sharqiya’s coverage of Saddam’s execution in explaining the closure.
“We had sent many warnings to the channel previously, but it insisted on circulating false news that provoked violence and hatred,” said Khalaf, the interior ministry spokesman.
On Nov. 30, the Interior Ministry said it had formed a special unit to monitor news coverage and vowed to take legal action against journalists who failed to correct stories the ministry deemed to be incorrect. The ministry runs the Iraqi national police and a separate paramilitary force.
The purpose of the monitoring unit, Khalaf said at the time, was to find “fabricated and false news that hurts and gives the Iraqis a wrong picture that the security situation is very bad, when the facts are totally different.”
Al-Sharqiya’s programming includes a number of Iraqi soap operas. Its owner, Saad al-Bazzaz, fled Iraq years before Saddam’s fall and returned after the regime collapsed.
Prominent employees of Al-Sharqiya have fallen victim to Iraq’s violence. Those slain include correspondent Ahmed al-Rasheed, and Walid Hassan, a famous comedian who was shot while driving in western Baghdad.
Hassan had performed in a comedy series called “Caricature,” which mocked coalition forces and Iraqi governments since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Federal 'Hate Law' Could Be Introduced This Week

With Congress back in session on January 3, the federal "hate crimes" bill could be reintroduced any time. The Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith introduced the same legislation last January 6, three days after Congress convened.

This is the most dangerous legislation ever to come before Congress. It leads directly to an end of free speech. Once free speech is gone, there is little to prevent the loss of all our other freedoms. The new Democrat-controlled Congress has all the votes it needs to quickly run this Orwellian bill through committee in the House and Senate and pass it. Unless they lose their nerve, thrown back by massive protest from the American people.

Extraordinary action must be taken NOW to back down ADL and intimidate them from even introducing the hate bill in this session.

Your Voice Will Make the Difference

Protest from the American people has defeated the hate bill three times in the last two years. Here's how, with God's help, we can do it again:

1) Powerfully impact members of Congress from your district:

At www.truthtellers.org are listed the names of the top legislative aides for every member of Congress (except the newly elected members). These legal experts and researchers exert tremendous influence on how busy senators and representatives think and vote. Now you can just as powerfully influence them!

At www.truthtellers.org your two Senators and their aides are listed alphabetically according to state. House members and their aides are separately listed the same way.
On the list, locate the House member for your district. (If you don't know your district, call the capitol hotline tollfree at 1-877-851-6437 or toll at 1-202-225-3121. This information is also available by calling your local library or at www.house.gov/writerep.)
Print out both sides of - http://www.truthtellers.org/hatelawsflyermailer.pdf - NPN's brochure "Hate Laws Will Make You a Criminal," available on the home page at www.truthtellers.org.
Make about 30 copies, enough to send to each member of the Senate and House from your district plus their aides. Fold into thirds.
Address each name and tape (do not staple) the flyer closed, add postage and mail.

Because you are a constituent of these members of Congress and their aides, you have considerable influence. You have power to vote them out next term and power to end the aides' employment. When they see your zip code, they will read the flyer. It will deeply impact them because all they have heard so far is ADL propaganda. These brochures will burrow deep into every legislative office, raising questions, doubts, fears and curiosity about ADL's hate crimes agenda.

Don't hesitate to send this brochure to liberal members of Congress or their aides. Hate laws can turn on them also. Already in many western nations liberals who publicly criticize Islam can be indicted as hate criminals. If enough of these brochures penetrate Congress, the effect will be to prejudice even liberal members of Congress and their staffs against the ADL hate crimes agenda. (Note: Do not send this brochure to members of Congress or their aides outside your district. Nonconstituent mail is discarded.)

2) Influence all members of Congress:

Begin toll-free phone calls to Congress on January 3. Visit www.truthtellers.org for the complete list of members of the new Congress. Set aside 15 minutes a day (before work or during lunch) to call toll-free 1-877-851-6437 or 1-866-340-9281 (toll is 1-202-225-3121).
Leave this message: "Please don?t vote for 'anti-hate' legislation. Hate laws have taken away free speech in Canada and most European countries." Ask to be transferred to the next member of Congress on the list or use the redial feature on your phone. In only 15 minutes a day for 7 weeks, you can voice a powerful protest to every member of Congress against establishment of a "big brother" federal hate crimes bureaucracy like Canada's.

TALK SHOW HOSTS:

Before Christmas, 23 national talk show hosts responded to my initial warning that Democrat control of Congress meant certain passage of the hate bill. Their interviews with me alerted hundreds of thousands of patriots to this unprecedented threat to freedom.

It is vital that all of these hosts re-book me. Many others should join them. In upcoming broadcasts I will emphasize NPN's new program to saturate congressional offices with flyers telling the whole truth about hate laws. Over the holidays, many listeners may have become distracted from the urgent hate bill threat. Talk hosts should call me now at 503-631-3808 to help generate a new tidal wave of truth into Congress -- washing away ADL's lies and backroom deals. With your help, this effort could make the deciding difference in securing freedom for talk radio and the internet for years to come!
